THINKING ABOUT ADDING SIDE STEPS?

THINKING ABOUT ADDING SIDE STEPS?

In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about side steps—why they’re important, how easy they are to install, what to look for before buying, and the side steps we personally recommend for your van build.

Whether you’re just starting your van conversion or upgrading an existing rig, side steps are one of those upgrades you don’t realize you need… until you have them.

WHY SIDE STEPS?

Don’t let the looks fool you—side steps make a huge difference in day-to-day van life.

If you don’t believe us, try getting in and out of a Sprinter van multiple times a day for a few days straight. It’s not fun. Entering a Sprinter without side steps can feel like climbing Mt. Everest, especially if your van is 4x4 or lifted.

Aftermarket side steps dramatically improve entry and exit, reducing strain on your knees, hips, and back—making your van life experience far more comfortable and enjoyable.

Additional benefits of side steps:

  • Easier access for passengers, pets, and kids
  • Reduced fatigue on long trips
  • Added confidence when stepping in or out on uneven terrain

MORE THAN JUST A STEP — ADDED PROTECTION

Side steps aren’t only about convenience. They also add a layer of protection to your van:

  • Help shield the lower body from rocks, boulders, and trail obstacles
  • Deflect road debris that can damage paint and body panels
  • Act as a buffer during off-road or tight parking situations

In short, side steps work just as hard protecting your van as they do helping you get in and out.

SIDE STEP CHECKLIST BEFORE BUYING

Before purchasing side steps, here are five important questions to ask:

1. Is there flex or bow in the side step?

When you step on a side step, there should be minimal flex. Too much movement usually means weak supports or poor-quality steel. Not all side steps are built the same—don’t judge solely by looks.

2. What is the foot depth?

Some side steps don’t allow your entire foot to rest comfortably. If part of your foot hangs off, stability is compromised. Always check step width and depth before buying.

3. Will they rust?

Metal rusts—especially in cold or wet climates. Look for steps with protective coatings to resist corrosion. Unless you’re going for that 1950s rally car look, rust resistance matters.

4. How hard are they to install?

If you’re DIY-installing, this is key. With proper hardware and clear instructions, most side steps should take 1–2 hours to install with basic tools.

5. Do they look bad a**?

Let’s be honest—style matters. If you’re adding side steps, you might as well choose a set that complements your van’s aesthetic and elevates its overall look.

THE SIDE STEPS WE RECOMMEND

Our top recommendation: Vanspeed Side Steps.

These steps are selling fast—and for good reason. They’re sold as a pair, including both driver and passenger sides, and are engineered specifically for Sprinter vans.

At first glance, you’ll notice the clean, low-profile design. What you don’t see is the countless hours of engineering, design revisions, field testing, and real-world feedback that went into creating them.

These steps strike the perfect balance between strength, style, and ease of installation, making them some of the best side steps on the market—and we’re proud to carry them at The Build Out Shop.

HOW EASY ARE THEY TO INSTALL?

Very easy.

This is a DIY-friendly install that typically takes 1–2 hours. Grab a second person to help hold the steps in place, follow the included instructions, and you’ll be good to go.
