5 Van Life Essentials

Life on the road is spontaneous by nature — but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for adventure. A solid van build goes beyond the basics and includes thoughtful planning for comfort, safety, and self-sufficiency. Here are 5 van life essentials that you may not have considered when building or upgrading your van.

1. Water and Waste Tanks

Living on the road means you’ll need reliable access to water. Heavy-duty, medium-sized containers are essential for storing freshwater, greywater, and wastewater — especially if your van includes a sink or toilet.

Dumping greywater on the ground is harmful, whether you’re parked in the city or exploring a national park. Always dispose of greywater properly at designated dump stations. A well-managed water system keeps your van clean, odor-free, and environmentally responsible.

2. Phone Plan with Unlimited Data and Roaming

Before hitting the road, take time to research your phone plan. Staying connected to family, friends, navigation apps, social media, and streaming services requires reliable coverage and unlimited data.

Make sure your plan doesn’t cap usage or slow speeds after a certain limit. Getting cut off mid-episode or losing service when you need directions is a frustration no one wants. In some cases, switching carriers or upgrading your plan before your trip can make all the difference.

3. Camping Stove

Even if your van has a built-in gas system, a portable camping stove is a must-have backup. If your primary system ever fails, a stove can save the day.

A camping stove also gives you the freedom to cook outdoors, keeping heat, moisture, and food smells out of your van. Cooking outside is often more enjoyable, especially when you’re parked somewhere scenic.

4. Toolbox

A well-stocked toolbox can be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a trip-ending problem. Fill your toolbox with odds and ends you may need for quick fixes on the road — tape, zip ties, and a pry bar are a great start.

Be sure to include the basics: a multi-bit screwdriver, pliers, cutter, wrench, and drill. We also recommend packing a roll mat to lie on if you need to crawl under the van, along with a can of gas leak detector spray for added safety.

5. Toilet

This often-debated van life feature is something you should seriously consider. Having a small, portable toilet on board can be a lifesaver in emergencies.

You never know when public restrooms will be unavailable or when nature calls at an inconvenient time. When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go — and having a backup option provides peace of mind no matter where the road takes you.

Additional Van Life Must-Haves

While these five essentials cover the basics, a few additional items can greatly improve your van life experience:

  • Proper insulation and ventilation for temperature control
  • Auxiliary battery or power system for off-grid living
  • Storage solutions to keep your space organized
  • Window coverings for privacy and temperature regulation
  • Outdoor gear for cooking, lounging, and exploring
